Stephen Connolly has maintained an active sound practice under various names and configurations since the mid-1990s. His work has moved through home-recorded tape experiments, improvised ensembles, song-based collaborations, field recording, and electroacoustic composition while largely remaining outside conventional genre boundaries.

Over the years he has self-released recordings, performed in DIY spaces and artist-run venues, participated in collective projects, and pursued an ongoing interest in the physical qualities of recorded sound: magnetic tape, environmental noise, repetition, decay, and accidental structure. Earlier projects expanded into collaborative groups, moving between experimental tape work, free improvisation, and guitar-centered songwriting. This period included quarter-inch tape loop performances in Brooklyn loft spaces, free jazz sessions with reed player Daniel Carter, and a growing fascination with the intersection of folk forms and experimental process.

The current incarnation of this work, operating primarily under the name Pothole Skinny, returns to many of those original concerns from a different vantage point. Guitar, field recordings, tape loops, found sounds, electronics, and live processing are assembled into evolving compositions where melody, texture, and environmental sound coexist without fixed hierarchy. Fragments emerge, dissolve, and reappear; environmental recordings become rhythm; mechanical artifacts become instruments.

Occupying a space between post-folk abstraction, musique concrète, improvisation, and experimental electronic music, Connolly's work draws equally from composition, chance, and material process. Across nearly three decades of activity, a consistent thread remains: a search for unexpected musical relationships hidden within ordinary sounds, imperfect technologies, and the gradual transformations of time.
